Land Governance, Natural Resources Management and Carbon Trading

TLC

Land degradation, exacerbated by climate change-driven droughts, dry spells, and erratic rainfall, is significantly threatening the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa. TLC is enhancing resilience through land restoration, strengthening governance practices, and implementing cutting-edge carbon initiatives.

In 2023, according to the Global Forest Watch findings, the country lost approximately 20,000 hectares of natural forest because of the aforementioned factors. This translates to 10.4MT of CO2e emissions. Stakeholder engagements and consultations at different levels (National, district and community level) affirmed the assertion of these acts. In addition, lack of land tenure security in rural communities was identified as one of the contributing factors.

Key interventions being implemented by TLC to mitigate these challenges are described below;
- Land restoration (Natural regeneration, tree and bamboo planting, cook stoves)
- Carbon development
- Land governance

Summary of achievements (July 2023 - June 2024)

  • 3,761 ha were placed under natural regeneration involving 8,333 households. From the total hectarage, 354 ha was under Assisted Natural Regeneration and 3,407 ha was under Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration.
  • Planted 2,555,860 of various trees.
  • Supported planting of 17,137 bamboos for various purposes including gully reclamation, ease access to poles and firewood.
  • Supported 32,156 households with cook stoves.
